With 1.6 billion people worldwide without access to electricity, artist Olafur Eliasson and engineer Frederik Ottesen developed the small, high-quality solar lamp Little Sun. After five hours of charging in the sun, Little Sun provides either ten hours of soft light or four hours of bright light, creating social spaces in countries without electricity: for cooking, working, learning and socialising - without dangerous and unhealthy lamp fuels. The clean and safe light of the solar lamp is even 90 percent cheaper than paraffin lighting when compared over two years.

Even in areas of the world where the availability of electricity is taken for granted, Little Sun is used in many ways. Since the official launch of Little Sun at the Tate Modern in London in 2012, the social project has sold over 500,000 solar lamps worldwide, over half of them in regions without electricity.
