Ash wood kantele from Choroi

Stringed instrument with 9 strings, made of solid ash wood. The sides of the kantele can be tuned diatonically and pentatonically. The instrument is built with the open design and the lemniscate in the inner area based on the original Finnish model. The traditional way of playing on the knees is possible as well as holding the kantele in the hands.

The history of the kantele

The kantele is a traditional Finnish plucked string instrument and is one of the oldest musical instruments in Finland. It is believed that the kantele was developed by the indigenous Finnish people as early as the first millennium BC.

Originally, the kantele was a shepherd's instrument and was made of animal skins and wood, but over the course of time the instruments have been further developed and refined.

Today there are different types of kantele, from small instruments with five strings to large concert kanteles with over 40 strings. The kantele is still played by many musicians and music lovers today and is considered an important part of Finnish culture.

When the first kantele was played in Finnish mythology, man and beast listened spellbound to the magical sound. Just like the mythological plucked instrument back then, our Choroi kantele enchants the listener today.
