Johann-Froescheis Lyra Bleistift Fabrik GmbH & Co KG produces and sells wooden pencils and other articles for the office, handicrafts and hobby sectors. Started as a small craft business, Lyra now produces more than 14 million wood-cased pencils a year in Nuremberg on an area of over 6400 square metres and exports them all over the world.

Sustainability and seals

In terms of sustainability, more than 85% of the wood used for the colouring pencils is FSC or PEFC certified. The pencils have a CE mark, which confirms that all EC directives and the requirements set out therein are complied with. The safety and health requirements of the EU Directive on the Safety of Toys are also observed in the production of the colouring pencils. The colouring pencils are also awarded the "Spiel gut" seal.

The history of Lyra

Lyra can look back on a history of more than 200 years. In 1956, the Lyra colouring giants, thick hexagonal pencils especially suitable for small children, were developed. In the meantime, Lyra is known not only for the colouring giants but also for the Lyra Rembrandt crayons, the Lyra Groove pencils and the Lyra Super Ferby. Since 2008, Lyra has belonged to the Italian FILA Group. As an internationally broad-based group, the companies exploit synergies in production and sales.

• In 1806, pencil maker Johann Froescheis took over a craft business in Nuremberg and began producing pencils even before Faber-Castell.

• Everything goes well, the company grows and in 1848 it switches to mass production of pencils.

• In 1860, the company moves to the Großweidenmühle, where machine-assisted production begins using water power.

• In 1868, the LYRA mark is introduced as a trademark, something unique for the industry at that time.

• In 1878 Andreas Froescheis leaves the management of the factory and Karl Grasser takes over.

• To expand the business, travellers are sent out to study the needs of foreign countries and to establish new trade relations.

• Lyra survived the First World War as a company and, despite complete destruction, also the Second World War.

• In 1956, Lyra, which was then still called Lyra-Orlow Pencil Factory, celebrated its 150th anniversary.

• In 1996, the foundation stone was laid for the Lyra Super Ferby, which is still the most popular and best-selling pencil shape in Germany.

• In 2008, the three-surface pencils are given recesses - the Lyra Groove are launched.

• Since 2008, LYRA has been part of the Italian group FILA Fabbrica Italiana Lapis ed Affini S.p.A. (FILA).

Lyra in the Waldorfshop

Im Waldorfshop finden Sie neben Bleistiften, Anspitzern und Radierer von Lyra auch Buntstifte und Sets in verschiedenen Varianten, z.B. Lyra Rembrandt Sets. Die Lyra Farbriesen gibt es unter anderen in Skin Tones und in einer Holzbox. Die Lyra Groove Triple gibt es im 6er oder im 12er Set. Die Lyra Super Ferby Buntstifte führen wir nicht nur in der Waldorf Selection, sondern sogar als Jubiläumsedition 15 Jahre Waldorfshop. In der Jubiläumsedition befinden sich 12 dicke Super Ferby für Kinder im Kindergarten oder in der Schule. Die Buntstifte in besonderer farbiger Zusammenstellung haben eine hohe Deckkraft und einen feinen Farbanstrich. Verpackt sind sie in einem liebevoll illustrierten Kartonetui. Die Umverpackung der Buntstifte wurde von der Künstlerin Ella Lapointe gestaltet und ist auf wenige Exemplare limitiert.
